I woke up at 5:00 AM and took the BTS to school. I was running low on Baht, so I stopped at the money exchange and the price for 100 USD has dropped nearly 400 Baht since I have been here. (down nearly 10 dollars). You never know when to buy and sell. It is a game of chance.
I went to the Chang tents to have breakfast and wanted to have veggies and shrimp with rice. I ordered asparagus with shrimp that had a sauce to mix with the white rice. Perfect! Until I took my chopsticks and took a bite...........................WOW, HOT!!
The owner said that I have been eating lots of hot food from his restaurant so he heated this one up with spices past my threshold. My head immediately began to sweat and my forehead too. The owner gave me sweet and sour sauce and brown sugar to add. I added little bits at a time and it took very little to make it perfect, for me. He brought three glasses of ice water and asked if I wanted a Singha Beer, 5:40 AM before work.
That was a real wake-up and turned out to be an unplanned adventure or at least experience!
Class went well and I told my early morning experience to my students. Me and my big mouth. They all want to bring in something hot to share with me me. I told them I will try and whoever makes my head sweat the most must have the hottest food. (I do anything to fit in). That led into a long discussion about foods that Americans eat and what foods are customary. They thought cereal was so BORING and so was toast. I am glad I have the weekend to get ready for my hot foods. It has been a very fast and fun two weeks.
There is a vendor that has his four puppies with him every day on a VERY busy street. They never venture towards it. When they started to follow me today, I said; NO! They pranced after me and I turned again and said MI CHI! They stopped immediately and went back to their owner and looked at me with those puppy dog eyes. It is 125 dollars to bring one home. Dog is MA, and Cat is Meow in Thai. I gave the dogs some meow food that I carry with me, but they wanted the rice instead.
Below: This is my second Thai pan handler that I have given money to. He was playing some great Neil Young song and I was impressed!!. Also, he was doing something for Baht. I think others are felt the same way. People would walk by and then turn around and brought money to him. Not just coins but 20, 50, 100 Baht bills. I went with 15 baht. I did not want to go overboard.
This was panoramic construction on the way home from school today at 5:00 PM
This monk told me that he has been a monk for three years and has not eaten meat since July 2015. He will eat meat in July 2016. I was a paparazzi taking this picture.
This is the Fruit of Thailand. Durian. It is banned in hotels, subway, trains, malls and most restaurants. The smell is so foul it has caused entire hotels to evacuate. I bought half of one on my way home and ate it outside. Maybe that is why Thailand has such foul smells in places.
Thai Facts:
Thailand is the only country with a Monkey college. The monkeys are trained to help people with disabilities and they learn how to pick coconuts. A PhD. from this college means the monkey can pick 1000+ coconuts per day!
Touching the King or Queen of Thailand is punishable by death. In 1888, the Queen Sunandha fell overboard from her boat and could not swim. Nearby witnesses knew if they touched her they would be killed...........................So, she drown.
